Genesis 21:1-34

Hello and welcome back...today we read Genesis 21:1-34

Today we learned that Sarah indeed had a son and named him Isaac. They circumcised him on the eighth day just as the Lord had commanded and they felt blessed.(Abraham was 100 years old) Isaac grew and was weaned.

We also learned that Sarah felt that the first son born by the maidservant was no longer needed...so she wanted Abraham to drive them out.

Abraham was distressed by this and the Lord came to him and said to do what ever Sarah had asked and that the son would also have a nation because he was a descendant of Abraham. So he gave Hagar two water skins and sent them out.

Now Hagar wandered the wilderness and when the water was used up she put the boy under some bushes...she could not bear to see him die...and he began to wail...The Lord heard his cry and opened the eyes of Hagar and she saw a well...and gave him a drink.

He grew into an archer and took a wife and lived in Egypt.

Abraham made a covenant with Abimelech...

23now therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but according to the kindness that I have shown to you, you shall show to me and to the land in which you have sojourned."
24Abraham said, "I swear it."
25But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well of water which the servants of Abimelech had seized.

Abimelech said he knew of no such thing...Abraham let seven ewe lambs go and made a covenant saying

"You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand so that it may be a witness to me, that I dug this well."

They called this place Beersheba

32So they made a covenant at Beersheba; and Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, arose and returned to the land of the Philistines.
33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.
34And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines for many day.

So today we got an understanding of the Lords promise to Abraham...first with his sons...and secondly with his blessings where ever he travled...even Abimelech knew of the blessing that was on him. And through it all Abraham called on the name of the Lord.

Please join me in tomorrow's reading of Genesis 22:1-24...ohhhh Tomorrow's reading is a good and thought provoking one...The offering of Isaac...until then...blessings on you day :o)
